The Public Prosecution has ordered the pretrial detention of 13 persons following investigations into separate incidents involving the dissemination of malicious news, statements and rumors through information technology platforms. In a statement issued Friday, the prosecution said the suspects were accused of spreading content that included calls to incite sectarian strife, promote violence and circulate misleading information that could undermine national unity and social cohesion. Authorities said some of the material shared online could also provoke public panic and harm the defense preparedness of the armed forces, particularly in light of the exceptional circumstances currently facing the country. Officials warned that such actions pose a direct threat to state security, public order and national stability, reports Al-Rai daily. The investigations were conducted under the direct supervision of Attorney General Saad Al-Safran, who ordered the formation of several investigative teams to examine the cases. According to the statement, the teams immediately began questioning the suspects and completing the required procedures. After reviewing the evidence, prosecutors decided to place the defendants in custody pending referral to criminal trial. The Public Prosecution stressed that protecting national unity and preserving public peace are among the core objectives safeguarded by law. It reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the law, maintaining public order and ensuring the security and stability of society. Officials also called on citizens and residents to act responsibly, especially during this sensitive period, urging them not to circulate rumors or misleading information on digital platforms. The statement emphasized the importance of awareness, solidarity and unity around the nation, its leadership and institutions, while warning that the spread of false information could incite panic, weaken national resolve and negatively affect the country’s defense readiness.
