Ramadan rush sends sheep prices soaring; some expected to hit 170 dinars

Sheep prices in Kuwait have surged sharply, driven by the suspension of imports from Iran and a seasonal spike in demand for sacrificial animals. The sudden supply shortage has pushed prices to record levels within a short period. During a field tour of the Shuwaikh sheep market, Al-Rai observed significant increases, with Naeemi sheep now selling between 120 and 150 dinars, as traders expect prices to climb to 170 dinars in Ramadan. Shifali sheep prices have also risen from 90 dinars to around 120 dinars, with forecasts they may exceed 140 dinars in the coming days, reports Al-Rai daily. Traders say the price surge began last week after Iranian imports — a key supply source — were halted, tightening market availability just as Ramadan demand intensified. Although a recent shipment from Syria arrived, merchants noted it was insufficient to stabilize prices. Despite rising costs, many families continue to prefer freshly slaughtered animals for Ramadan gatherings and charity distributions. Meanwhile, consumers are increasingly turning to frozen and imported meat as a more affordable alternative, with prices ranging between 25 and 85 dinars, depending on size and origin. Market observers expect prices to remain elevated until early Ramadan, unless new import shipments arrive to restore balance between supply and demand.
