US warns of potential attacks on universities in Iraq, region

2026-03-30 - 06:23

The US Embassy in Baghdad has warned that Iran and allied militias may target universities in Iraq perceived to have links to the United States, including institutions in Baghdad, Sulaymaniyah, and Dohuk. In a statement posted on X, the embassy cautioned that American citizens should leave Iraq, adding that authorities in Baghdad have not prevented attacks launched from the Iraqi territory against the United States and its regional partners. The warning follows threats by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), which said it would target American- and Israeli-affiliated universities across the region in retaliation for recent strikes on Iranian universities, dw.com reports. Amid escalating tensions, several universities have shifted to online learning, including the American University of Beirut.
