UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the urgent need for a shared global understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) based on science and knowledge. This came in a speech delivered by Guterres Tuesday evening at the first meeting of the newly formed International Independent Scientific Group on Artificial Intelligence since the UN General Assembly adopted the list of experts proposed by the Secretary-General to form the group. In his opening remarks at the virtual meeting, Guterres described the group as “global, independent, unique, and the first of its kind,” noting that it is dedicated to helping shape the course of AI for the benefit of humanity. He explained that the group’s role is to enrich the global dialogue with independent and credible science at a time when “geopolitical tensions are rising, conflicts are escalating, and the importance of safe and responsible AI is growing.” Guterres added that the group’s work will help decision-makers move from conflicting claims to practical solutions by building effective controls, unleashing innovation for the common good, and strengthening international cooperation. He explained that the team will establish its work framework within a few months, setting priorities, forming specialized working groups, and providing a substantial, evidence-based assessment. He noted that this work will contribute to the “first annual global dialogue on AI governance.” –KUNA
